Lead Gen on a Budget: Practical Strategies That Work

AI Search & SEODigital Marketing

Lead gen on a budget

Marketing often gets messy when you’re trying every new idea you see online.

A podcast tip here, a YouTube success story there, a new viral AI marketing strategy that’s meant to “revolutionise” the way you do marketing…

You can end up making a millimetre of progress in a million different directions and not seeing any meaningful results.

The reality is that marketing doesn’t fail because of a lack of ideas.

Most marketing fails because of a lack of consistent action and follow through on the right few ideas.

The good thing is that you don’t always need to make a huge investment of time or money to consistently generate leads and keep your pipeline full.

All you need is a clear plan, focused action, and a few simple assets that build trust and visibility.

Here are three practical, low-cost lead generation strategies we use at SGD (and teach to many of our clients) that generate results – especially when you’re on a lean budget.

Key Points

  • Stop jumping from idea to idea and start consistently focusing on what works
  • Reactivate lost opportunities with proven email templates
  • Build trust by showcasing reviews, case studies and recognisable logos
  • Target local searches with focused SEO landing pages
  • Simple, consistent actions can generate quality leads without a big budget

1. Follow-up “Lost” Opportunities

Most businesses have pipelines full of opportunities that went quiet.

While there’s truth in the saying “there’s fortune in the follow up”, many sales teams neglect to follow up in a way that gets results.

Instead of the usual “just checking in” email, use follow-up templates that add value and encourage response to reactivate the deal.

Here are a few follow up email templates to help:

S.P.E.A.R. Email Template

SPEAR = Short, Personal, Expecting A Reply. I learned this technique from Taki Moore and it’s a valuable tool in the marketing and sales follow up toolkit.

Here’s the template:

Hi [Name],

Are you still looking for help with [Project]?

[Sign off]

Anti Follow-Up Email Template

Use this email to add value, nurture existing leads and reactivate old ones to start a conversation without being pushy.

Hi [Name],

I saw this the other day and thought of you.

[Link to a relevant article, tool, or idea]

I hope you find it valuable.

[Sign off]

The Magic Email Template

Time to close the loop or reopen the conversation. This email is “magic” because it simultaneously opens the door for the right prospects while closing the door for the wrong ones.

Subject: Closing the loop

Hi [Name],

Since I haven’t heard from you about [Project], I assume your priorities have changed or you’ve gone in another direction.

Please let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

2. Build Trust Signals

It’s no secret that people buy from businesses they trust.

With the ability to create AI content in a single prompt, it’s more important now than ever to build real authority to showcase trust signals that are difficult to fake.

You can earn that trust by showcasing Google reviews, using real client logos, and making your credibility easy to see.

Take a moment now to look at your homepage, key service pages and contact page.

  • Is it clear that others have trusted you and had a good experience?
  • Do you have positive reviews, case studies and testimonials showing high up on your web pages?
  • Does your Google Business Profile and social media accounts look professional, trustworthy and like a business you would want to hire?

If not, take some time now to work with your web design agency or marketing team to make the adjustments to showcase trust signals so you can earn more business.

3. Target Local Searches

At SGD we often talk about the “most likely to buy” audience.

These are the people in your target market and geographic area who are actively looking for a solution to their problem and a company to work with.

What would it be like if your business showed up in the top search results when someone was looking for the solution you provide?

This is what’s possible with a local SEO campaign.

Here’s how to implement this strategy:

  1. Start by creating or updating a page on your website targeting your key service and location (e.g. “SEO Agency Melbourne”).
  2. Make sure the page is easy to read, has a clear call to action, includes trust signals (reviews, case studies and recognisable logos) and answers the questions your audience is searching for.
  3. Link to this page from other pages on your site, your main menu and request indexing via Google Search Console.

As an example, we worked with the team at CyberCX on a local SEO strategy to target “penetration testing services melbourne”.

They currently rank #1 in this position and it helps them generate a healthy stream of qualified leads each week.

As you can see from the lead generation strategies above, you don’t need flashy or expensive marketing to win new business.

You just need to show up consistently in the right places, with the right message, and the right follow-ups.

Next steps:

Review this list and choose one thing to take action on in the next 7 days and then measure the results.

If you do take action on one of these strategies – I’d love to know how you go!

FAQS

1. What’s the most cost-effective strategy for generating leads today?

Start by reactivating leads already in your pipeline. Often, businesses overlook the value of following up with prospects who showed interest but didn’t convert.

To follow up with prospects use short, value-packed email templates (like S.P.E.A.R. or the Magic Email).

2. Do trust signals actually impact lead generation?

Trust signals like Google reviews, testimonials, and recognisable client logos help visitors feel confident in your business. Making trust visible on your homepage and key pages builds the confidence needed to take action.

3. What should I do if I don’t have any reviews?

Start with what you’ve got and make it visible. Trust builds one step at a time.

You can:

  • Ask recent clients for a one-line testimonial or Google Review, one or two can begin to build credibility.
  • Highlight a small win as a mini case study.
  • Share how  solved a specific problem for one of your clients.

4. How can I improve my local SEO without spending much?

Create a focused, well-structured local landing page by:

  • Target “[your service] + [your suburb/city]”
  • Add reviews, a clear call to action, and internal links
  • Link to it internally and request indexing via Google Search Console.

5. How do I make sure my business is ready for effective lead generation?

Before investing in ads or paid campaigns, make sure your foundation is solid. If people click and land on a weak page, you’ll waste budget.

  • Ensure your website clearly explains what you do and who you help
  • Add visible trust signals: reviews, testimonials, client logos
  • Have a clear call to action on key pages
  • Make sure your Google Business Profile and socials look active and trustworthy

A strong foundation means you’re ready to convert visitors into leads—so your marketing spend delivers real results.
