Young professional looking up businesses using AI on their phone in Melbourne

If you’re looking to optimise your business and website to appear in AI search and GEO, then you first need to identify what you want to appear for.

There is a big difference between wanting to appear for a term like “web design” and to appear for “best web design agency in Melbourne that specialises in WordPress and SEO with more than 50 5-star reviews”.

Here’s what AI tracking software is missing

One of my clients was using some AI visibility tracking software to analyse their website and competitors. . The software was useful if you added in the right prompts, but the key part that was missing was: “what are the right prompts?”

They contact me and we had a chat about their business, target audience and key services to see what would be most relevant and valuable.

As part of our AI Visibility Audit process, we already had an AI prompt generator that we use to help determine the top 20 relevant prompts to start with AI visibility and GEO tracking.

I’m sharing that resource below for any other businesses that are in a similar situation and want to track AI results but don’t know which prompts to track.

AI prompt generator

Use the below prompt to analyse your business website and find the relevant overall prompts to use for AI tracking. You can use any AI tool but the ones that I recommend are ChatGPT and Claude.

The prompt:

You are an expert in AI Engine Optimisation (AEO) and search intent analysis. I’m going to provide you with a business website URL.

Step 1: Research

Visit and analyse the homepage at the URL provided. Do not skip this step. Do not rely on prior knowledge of the business. Read the actual page to identify the business name, services offered, target customers, service area, and value proposition. If you cannot access the page, let me know and stop.

Step 2: Generate Prompts

Based only on what you found on the page, generate exactly 20 natural-language prompts that reflect how real users ask AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) about this type of business and its services.

Rules:

  • Write prompts as real humans speak to AI assistants, conversational, specific, with context about their situation.
  • Never include the business name in any prompt except for exactly two branded prompts.
  • Cover all major services listed on the website across the 20 prompts.
  • Include the business’s city/region naturally in at least 8 prompts.
  • Every prompt must be specific enough that an AI assistant could realistically mention or recommend a specific business in its response.
  • Never use em dashes (—) in any prompt. Use commas, periods, or natural sentence breaks instead.

Distribution across these 20 prompts:

  • 3 Informational/Educational (learning about the service or industry)
  • 4 Transactional/Local (ready to hire or take action, includes location)
  • 3 Pricing (cost, budgeting, what to expect to pay)
  • 3 Comparison (comparing providers, evaluating options, “best of” lists)
  • 3 Commercial Investigation (how to choose, red flags, what to ask)
  • 2 FAQ (specific common concerns or objections)
  • 2 Branded (includes the business name)

URL: [ADD THE URL HERE](#)

End of prompt.

Pro tip #1: Target a specific page

If you just want to analyse one specific page, then make these changes:

  • Change the first line of step 1 to: “Visit and analyse the page at the URL provided. Do not skip this step.”
  • Change the URL to the specific page

Pro tip #2: Do additional research

Ideally, you would tailor these to suit the target audience and key services, as well as do a deeper review of the AI results, Google search results, and “people also asked” in order to develop prompts that match different stages of the buyer journey.

But if you’re just getting started, then this is a nice and simple framework to build on.
