How a Change of Scenery Can Spark New Ideas & Solve Business Problems

Last week, we swapped our desks in Collingwood for Tropical CoWorking in Koh Lanta, Thailand—a tropical island known for its crystal-clear waters, lush landscapes, and surprisingly fast internet speeds.

While it was technically a company retreat, it became something much bigger: a masterclass in creative problem-solving, fresh perspectives, and deeper team connections.

For many businesses, the daily grind is filled with to-do lists, meetings, and endless deadlines. But stepping away—even for a short time—can create breakthroughs that wouldn’t happen in the usual routine.

Here’s why you should consider it for your own business.

1. New Environments Create New Ideas

Ever noticed how the best ideas don’t come when you’re staring at your screen? A change of scenery can unlock creative thinking in ways you don’t expect.

Sometimes that’s even in the shower

On Koh Lanta, we worked from a tropical coworking space—surrounded by trees, fresh air, and high-speed internet faster than we get back home in Australia.

The combination of a relaxed setting and an efficient workspace made it easy to step away from routine tasks and focus on bigger-picture thinking.

For your business, this doesn’t have to mean a tropical island retreat. It could be as simple as:

  • Booking a few days at a local coworking space with a fresh atmosphere
  • Taking your team offsite for a day of strategy and brainstorming
  • Encouraging remote work from different locations to spark new ideas

A new environment breaks the cycle of “we’ve always done it this way” thinking and opens the door to fresh innovation.

2. Observing Other Lifestyles = A New Lease on Problems

Seeing how other people live, work, and solve challenges can shift your perspective on your own business problems.

In Thailand, we met entrepreneurs, remote workers, and digital nomads who approach work differently. Some built businesses to support a lifestyle of freedom, while others worked in short, focused sprints and spent more time exploring.

Seeing this firsthand made us question:

Are we working efficiently, or just staying busy?

Are we stuck in rigid workflows that no longer serve us?

How can we simplify our approach while still delivering top results?

For your business, consider stepping out of your usual circle. Attend an event, meet professionals from different industries, or even just have conversations outside your typical network.

Sometimes, the answer to a stubborn problem is hiding in someone else’s perspective.

3. Face-to-Face Time Strengthens Teams

For businesses that operate remotely (like many do now), digital tools keep us connected. But nothing replaces real, in-person interactions.

Spending time face-to-face with your team strengthens relationships in a way that Slack messages and Zoom calls never can.

It’s where real trust, collaboration, and genuine conversations happen.

If your business relies on remote teams, think about ways to bring people together in person:

  • Host an annual or quarterly retreat
  • Plan team-building days that aren’t just about work
  • Encourage local meetups for remote staff

These moments build deeper connections, leading to stronger collaboration, better communication, and a more engaged team—even when everyone returns to working remotely.

4. Work Can Happen Anywhere—Use It to Your Advantage

One of the biggest takeaways from our time in Koh Lanta was this: work is no longer tied to an office, a city, or even a country.

We often get caught up in endless tasks, deadlines, and to-do lists. But having a business that can operate in the cloud, where work can happen anywhere and anytime, is a powerful advantage.

For your business, this might mean:

  • Offering your team more flexibility in where they work
  • Shifting focus from hours worked to results achieved
  • Leveraging digital tools to run your business from anywhere

Taking control of when and where you work isn’t just about convenience—it’s about creating space for big ideas, solving problems faster, and building a business that works for you (not the other way around).

Feeling inspired? Go for a walk and give it a go.

The biggest breakthroughs don’t happen in the middle of back-to-back meetings. They happen when you step away, think differently, and give yourself space to innovate.

Whether it’s a week-long retreat, a new work environment, or just a different way of looking at things, find ways to break out of your routine.

You might just discover your next big business breakthrough in the process.
