The Risk of Relying Only On Social Media For Your Marketing

The Risk of Relying Only On Social Media For Your Marketing

When you’re promoting your business online, it’s great to see success on your social media accounts.

Growing your followers and engagement feels like progress.

But here’s the risk: If all your growth lives on social platforms, you’re building on borrowed land.

Your social media accounts, no matter how large, are controlled by someone else’s rules.

Social media is a rented asset.

A sudden algorithm change or an unexpected account suspension can wipe out years of work overnight.

In August 2025, several Australian businesses learned this the hard way when Meta shut down their accounts without warning, leaving them with no direct way to reach their customers.

So how do you protect yourself?

The answer is to build a professional website.

A website gives your business its own space online, one that you fully control. You decide what visitors see, how they interact, and what actions they can take.

Your website is an owned asset (rather than a rented asset).

More importantly, a well-structured website builds credibility and grows in value over time.

When people want to check if your business is legitimate, they don’t just search on social media. They search across platforms, including Google and AI services, and they’re looking for signals that your business is legitimate – including looking for your website.

This isn’t about choosing between social media or a website. The two should work together as part of a holistic marketing strategy.

Social media helps you capture attention, while your website converts that attention into leads and enquiries.

Done well, your website becomes the trust-building hub that supports every other marketing channel.

Social success shows you know your audience. Bringing that same energy into your website means you can create a content-driven asset you actually own and one that increases in value and supports your business long term.

If you’re ready to move from rented space to something you own, let’s talk.
