The Number #1 Local SEO Ranking Factor

Getting to the top of Google is all about your website, right?

Not entirely.

When it comes to showing in the top results for local search, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is even more imporant than your website.

This is because the “map pack” listings show up first.

SEO company MOZ conducted a study on local SEO and found that the #1 ranking factor for ranking in the map pack was having an optimised Google Business Profile.

If you’re looking to rank higher in local search results, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is a powerful tool.

It’s not just a listing; it’s a way to showcase your business, attract local customers, and stand out from the competition.

Why is it important?

46% of Google searches are local, and businesses with complete profiles are 2.7x more likely to be seen as reputable.

So, a well-optimised GBP isn’t just nice to have—it’s a proven marketing tool.

Here’s how to optimise your Google Business Profile:

1. Ensure business information is consistent

Start by ensuring your business information is consistent across your GBP, website, and third-party platforms like Apple Maps (via business connect), Truelocal, Word of Mouth and Bing Places.

Even small differences (e.g., “Street” vs. “St.”) can confuse Google and hurt your ranking.

2. Fill in all details

Next, fill out every available field in your Google Business Profile.

Add your primary and secondary categories, list your products or services, and write a compelling business description.

These details help Google and your customers understand what you offer.

3. Get 5-star reviews and respond to them

Remember to build your 5-star reviews.

Positive reviews not only increase your ranking but also build trust.

Make it easy for customers to leave reviews by sharing a direct link, and always respond—whether the review is positive or not.

Responding to reviews is actually a ranking factor, so you want to be sure that you respond quickly to reviews that come in.

4. Keep your Google Profile up to date

Finally, keep everything up to date and accurate.

Whether it’s a new phone number or holiday hours, keeping your profile accurate ensures customers can reach you when they need to.

Optimising your GBP is a simple yet powerful way to improve your local SEO to attract and convert more customers.
