About the client

The name MAKOLETTE is derived from the Hebrew word for corner store (mah-KOH-let). In Israel, a mahkohlet is the real heart of the community, a place where local people gather to exchange produce, crafts and wares. Friendship, creativity, sustenance and love all flow through this marketplace. When she first approached us, MAKOLETTE founder Rina Michael expressed her desire to recreate the atmosphere of a Tel Aviv mahkohlet on the web.

About the project

The name MAKOLETTE is derived from the Hebrew word for corner store (mah-KOH-let). In Israel, a mahkohlet is the real heart of the community, a place where local people gather to exchange produce, crafts and wares. Friendship, creativity, sustenance and love all flow through this marketplace. When she first approached us, MAKOLETTE founder Rina Michael expressed her desire to recreate the atmosphere of a Tel Aviv mahkohlet on the web.

In collaboration with designer Julia Jacque, we developed a new logo and selected a colour scheme of indigo blue, salmon and white to reflect the coastal tones of Tel Aviv. We used these on the website, business cards and swing tags to provide consistent branding across all media.

The MAKOLETTE website brings together artists and craftspeople from all over Tel Aviv. Their faces greet you from a gallery of portrait tiles on the Makers & Artists page. Each artist’s name slides into view as you hover over the picture. Clicking on the picture takes you to their profile page which tells you more about their inspirations and passions.

You can browse the fruits of their labour in the virtual Marketplace. Products can be arranged in a grid or a list and you can narrow down the search using the menu to the left. On each product page you’ll find a description, specifications and an image gallery. We utilised the flexibility of WooCommerce to display many products with variations in pattern and colour. In case you want to recommend a product to a friend, there are social sharing icons on all product pages.

Below the colourful banners on the Homepage  there is a row of featured products to scroll through. This carousel also appears beneath on individual product pages and artist profiles.

At the bottom of each page you’ll find a newsletter sign up field to stay up to date on MAKOLETTE products. In addition to a Blog and Contact page, there is also a search function for the entire site, as well as a customer portal for account holders to log in to view their orders.

And behind all this is a powerful yet user-friendly CMS, enabling Rina Michael and her staff to easily manage inventory, orders, content and media.

Seriously Good Design has lived up to its name. James and his team have delivered great service, flexibilty and a can-do attitude that made hurdles less high to jump over and problems so easy to solve. A sunny attitude also really helps to get the job done and this was part of the package even on potentially challenging development days. This is just the beginning for MAKOLETTE and we look forward to an ongoing happy partnership with our co-creators at SGD!
