Meeting Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress.

Meeting Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress.

On Thursday night, I (James) had the pleasure of meeting Matt Mullenweg the founder of the almighty WordPress.

Matt was in town for a number of special events with the local tech and WordPress community.

For those who are unfamiliar, Matt is the creator of the world’s largest content management system – WordPress. However, what some people might not know is that he is actually the founder and CEO of a web development corporation called Automattic, which is in fact the company behind WordPress. Also, Matt is just 30 years old.

It was incredibly eye opening to hear Matt’s version of where WordPress is currently at and his vision for the future. I felt very inspired by Matt’s story, especially since we at SGD are now exclusively building WordPress sites for our clients!

A couple of things we learned from Matt:

  • Currently, WordPress has a market share of 23% of the web. About 19% more than its closest competitor, Joomla.
  • WordPress is the most secure CMS out there. It’s even used by the US Government!
  • Other large corporates using WordPress include The New York Times, CNN, UPS, and Time Magazine, just to name a few.
  • Thanks to its open source format, WordPress will continue to evolve and has plans to target the app market.
  • From a client perspective, the ease and simplicity of managed sites will continue improving.
  • He went to school with Beyoncé

This month, WordPress turned a healthy 11 years young (happy birthday WP!), and we are excited to say that the future looks extremely bright for everyone, including all of our wonderful clients using this internationally acclaimed and ever-growing CMS!
